Gidday Steve,

With no disrespect to you personally, this place is for the collectors of number plates. You need to take a better look around and see what we really are interested in.

Trying to sell the right to display NSW registation 'PACKER' in this forum is a waste of web space and our time to read it. :censored:

If Rick is stupid enough to offer you $20,000 you had better just rip right over there right now and take his money. Make sure its cash! It will be the best 20grand you ever made. :auto:

I bet all the plateshed folks will have many tales of the one that got away.

The first one to spring to mind was the plate SYDNEY (NSW). The owners wouldn't take anything for it but when it came time to sell and it was put up for auction.

It flopped pathetically as the best offer was $30,000, 2 bidders only. Where were all the offers over $100,000? No where. :look2:

The same plate in the ACT was also floated around the time of the 2000 Olympics.
The owner knocked back $50,000 at the time. Last time I saw it advertised a few month ago $5,000 would have bought it.

Howdy Steve :cowboy:

I'd give you $21,000 but i want the plate that says KERRY included in the deal, so i can put it on the front of the go-cart and the PACKER plate on the back
You wouldn't happen to have the TRUMP & MURDOCH plates would you? I'm missing those too :saythat:

You go Steve!!

Let me guess - you just waltzed into your local RTA and forked out the $400 to buy this plate combo PACKER, and you hope to make squillions on it?

Don't you think if Kerry Packer wanted that plate, he would already have it? You are wasting our time, and even better still, you have wasted your money!

The record price for a NSW custom plate (that's what it is) is $32,000, and that was for single letter A, at auction. That is documented and well known.

Further to the above post re: NSW plate SYDNEY, that tosser had been told by an auctioneer that he would get over $200,000 for it. So he gave him the job of auctioning it. The auctioneer tried to get a starting bid of $100,000 for it. No takers. Tried again at $80,000, and again no takers. Tried again at $50,000, and yet again no takers. Finally a bidder yelled out $20,000 (might have been Rick Damelian!) and his bid was accepted. Then another bidder came in, and the bar was raised to $30,000. That's where the action stopped, and the plate was passed in - no sale! So the tosser who had owned the plate and paid the RTA lease fee since 1981 when he first acquired SYDNEY (ranging from $180 the first year, up to $320 when he tried to sell) had spent less than $5,000 on the plate, and knocked back a clear $25,000 profit.

I have to agree that if ANYONE is offering you a price where you make a profit on this plate, you best take it. I would offer you $20, because that's all that a NSW custom plate is worth in this "expired tin" collecting hobby.

The only NSW plates worth the big $$$ buddy are ones with just numbers. They started in 1910 and now have 94 years of history, many being tied up in family trusts. Not just anyone can walk into an RTA office and buy one. And that's why they are worth big $$$ - everybody wants one, but not everybody can!

I leave you with this thought. ANYONE can walk into any RTA office at any time and order a NSW custom plate. They are available to anybody. The reason you were able to walk in and buy PACKER was because NO-ONE ELSE WANTED IT!!! :bootyshake:

Thanks for all the gloom and doom boys, you really know how to keep a positive outlook on things :rockin:

Yeah yeah reality, blah, blah, blah......heard it all before.

Here's one that will really upset you then.........bought SWANS1 , walked into the RTA and ordered it, "apparently because NO-ONE ELSE WANTED IT!!!", boom boom!!

Paid $320 and then advertised in the SMH the next weekend and flogged it to a Swans fan (business dude) for $3500 CASH!!!! around 900% profit

Sorry guys............I was wrong and foolish to do it :tantrum:

Please accept my apology as I know nothing about buying and selling numberplates....well the right to display them anyway

:bootyshake:

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhhaha

C'mon Steve, pull the other one - it plays jingle bells!

How many others have you bought and advertised them week after week with no success? Tell us all about those  Are you in front all up yet?

Let me know when you make enough to get into the REAL market - numeral only plates  Even a 6 digit NSW gets nearly $10K now

Oh, of course, you wouldn't spend that much on a plate now would you

Sorry about all the DOOM and GLOOM Steve but you have to be a realist.

There is a huge difference between your $20,000 asking price on the PACKER plate and the $3500 you got for the SWANS1 plate  What makes the PACKER plate worth so much more? If anything the football plate would be more sought after seeing most AFL clubs have 30,000+ 'die hard' paid up members, and taking that into consideration take a look at what price the SWANS1 fetched  A far cry from the $20,000 your asking on the PACKER.

Being a number plate enthusiast, i like to keep on top of, and browse sites that do have plates for sale with rights to display. I can tell you from years of looking at these things that many plates listed have been there for many months and in some cases even years. The only thing that changes are the prices. They come down with time!

I'll give you an example...there is one tosser here in Victoria who would have paid about $300 for the combination FOXFM. Fox is one of Melbourne's leading radio stations on the AusStereo network (i think 2DAY FM is the sister station in Sydney) This plate has been for sale @ $20,000 for about 4 years now and will never sell at that price. The radio station is the only prospective buyer and because of this guys greed, on principle they will not buy it from him. They have opted for and already have FOXFM1 FOXFM2 etc etc.

Sorry but your PACKER plate falls into the same category. There is only one 'Packer' in this country who could afford that plate at your price and he isn't stupid enough to buy it from you. He is a business man...your not!
If you do sell it to him for $20,000 i'll eat my words (but i cant see that happening) One other thing, if you want to corner the market, you better buy up the PACKER combination in all Australian states so he cant have 'em

I wish you luck Steve, and just to show that the members on this site aren't totally against what your doing (but we do find it amusing) i have given you numerous links below of sites that specialise in plate sales in this country. Take a look at them, advertise there, and over time you will see for yourself that there is not alot of money to be made and sales are slow.

One more helpful hint: if you are going to do it, try and get custom combinations that appeal to a wider market. Mr. Packer is a very rich man because he is not STUPID!!!

And how come you advertised your plate here Steve - oh that's right - because it was FREE!

Moz, the club gets letters to advertise people's plates ALL THE TIME. Geoff gets them, I get them, and I'm sure David gets them. Some have their own prices they want, others look for offers. All these folks are looking for is a quick buck, yet NONE of them is ever forthcoming with any $$$ to place an advert.

They ALL want the free add, but instead, they ALL find my recycling bin.

My 2 bob's worth:
Mr K Packer wouldn't put that on his car anyway. His security people would advise him against it. I have worked for large multinational companies and they might put their "name" plate on a delivery truck but never on the boss's car for fear of kidnap etc.

PACKER can mean other things anyway: Macquarie Dictionary says "One whose business is packing food etc..." "One who packs..." :help:
